The relation between good governance and anti-money laundering policies : the impacts on financial institutions in Malta

Abstract

The prevention on money laundering has been widely discussed over several years. However, it was never clear enough on how to mitigate money laundering and the importance of such activity. Many academics discussed and analysed the factors of money laundering, out of which one of them is good governance. The research will be analysing the relationship between good governance and anti-money laundering and how does this relationship impact the financial institutions, specifically the regulators and credit institutions in Malta. To answer this research, a qualitative mixed methodology was applied by using content analysis with descriptive statistics and an empirical study observing and analysing secondary analysis with official statistics. Throughout this research it was noticed that there was limited information both from the academic side and official primary sources. Therefore, the data collection included newspaper articles, reports and official statistics. The results obtained from this research, implies that further investigation and in-depth analysis must be implemented, to improve the understanding of risks and applicability within the credit institutions.
