Abstract: This project explores the views of self of preadolescent boys living in residential care, through the use of narratives and art as research tools. A narrative method was used in conjunction with art as an easier means of expression for the participants. Five boys in residential care participated in three group art sessions, structured around three themes: their favourite place, significant others and view of self. Individual interviews were then carried out with each participant, exploring their experience of the art session, personal meanings behind the drawings and their view of self. Consequently, a profile of each participant was constructed and individual themes obtained from the data to explore each boy's view of himself. Common themes were elicited and analysed to look at varying aspects of their views of self. Results indicated the effectiveness of using art as a tool for facilitating research with young participants, while providing insight into how a preadolescent boy in residential care views himself.
