Abstract: The thesis attempts to review theories of hypertextuality, which have emerged in the last decade, particularly where these theories affect literature. Hypertext carries substantial implications for the development of literary theory, the humanities and humanity in general. This is because it offers an alternative medium to print and thus an alternative means of working with literary theory and the humanities. Its implications hint towards a more non-linear way of life as regards to humanity in general. These issues will be analyzed in the body of this thesis Section one discusses the history of hypertext and traces conceptual origins in literary theory. The second section analyzes the role text plays within hypertext and how this changes from the print to digital medium. The third section explores the changing role of author in the new medium. The fourth section tackles issues of narrative in the digital medium. These issues include the influence of plot on hypertext, the move from linearity to non-linearity and the impact of this on narrative techniques. The fifth and last section explores the future of this new medium including a speculation is given as to the possible development of hypertext and the influence it will have on literature.
