| Abstract: | Objective: The purpose of the study was to investigate whether speed characteristics of a Karate front kick, Mae-geri, is subject to significant change immediately after a static hamstring stretch. The research also attempted to compare the parameters between karate athletes and non-Karate practitioners. Method: A 3D motion analysis data capture of repeated Mae-geri kicks recorded pre and post intervention (bilateral static hamstring stretch; 30 second hold at POD). Thirteen participants divided into K-group (Karate athletes, n= 6) and NK-group (nonKarate practitioners, n= 7) Results: No statistical significance was found in peak velocity and peak acceleration of the Mae-geri kick, pre-stretch and post-stretch. Pre-stretch time of return (p =0.023, p < 0.05) and the post-stretch time of return (p = 0.032, p < 0.05), were found to be significantly faster for the K-group. Conclusion: Short duration static stretching of the hamstrings will in no way improve, hinder or alter peak velocity and peak acceleration of a Mae-geri kick. The overall speed of the kick is affected by the level of expertise and training of the individual. |
