Abstract: As a reaction to Soviet expansionism following the end of WWII, NATO was created in April 1949, for the purpose of promoting peace and security in Europe. This goal could only be accomplished by consolidating the Atlantic link. With the end of cold war, some argued that NATO role was fulfilled. This paper will seek to establish how this organization is currently redefining its post-Cold War identity. Concerned with this identity dilemma, its members thought it wise to appease prior adversaries and insure security in Europe particularly in East and Central Europe. As a result, enlargement of this organisation was contemplated Concerned with seeking its European security position in the post-Cold War environment, NATO introduced an intermediary instrument such as NACC and PPP to establish a military doctrine with political dimension for countries that are party to it and also others ‘able and willing’. This paper will examine the quest of CEE countries in seeking membership with NATO and conclude by looking at the security and political implications of NATO enlargement.
