Inside the Malta Union of Teachers, 1919-2009 : ninety years of active trade unionism and professional development

Abstract

The events which are narrated in this book are in fact recent history, but well worth their chronicle. These are a string of happenings, most within living memory, which should be retold as history. I remember Mr. Antonio Galea the founder of the Union, in his very mature and venerable years, but when he still had a clear and lucid memory. I can also recall having met most of the former Presidents of the Union, as well as many of their former opposite numbers in the Department of Education and in the Ministry. During seven years (1987-94) I was the Minister of Education with whom the Union had meetings, agreements and disagreements. Even so it was interesting to have a glimpse at the view from the other side, as the book is compiled from the records of the meetings of the Union's organs, especially but not solely concerning happenings before my time, but also during my time as I found myself not always correctly understood.
