| Abstract: | The direction in which the European Union is heading has been a matter of debate for decades. The European Constitution now provides this direction, by strengthening a union of 25 Member States, and possibly more in the near future. It gives the European Union a legal identity and solid structure to accommodate European citizens and create a democracy that is transparent and open. The adoption of the European Constitution depends on the ratification of the Treaty in each and every Member State, according to their national Constitutions. A Member State can ratify the Constitution either by a Parliamentary motion, or by resorting to public opinion by means of a referendum. This dissertation aims to analyse the ratification process in the microstates of the European Union, and examine the common behaviours of small states in light of the ratification process in these countries. I also intend to explore the current situation in each country, including the political state and the public opinion and participation. |
