Abstract: The period from the Great Siege of Malta of 1565 to the Christian naval victory over the Muslins at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 was a most interesting phase in the history of Malta and the Order of St John. Not only did the Order, in combination with the Maltese inhabitants and some foreign help, manage to ward off the Muslim menace in a longdrawn out conflict which dragged through the summer months of 1565, but immediately following that hard-won victory, the Knights decided to remain in Malta for good, and thus, launched in these islands their most important and ambitious building project up till then - the erection of a new city, eventually to be named after its proposer and most ardent and enthusiastic supporter, Grand Master la Valette. And if this were not enough, while the construction of the new city of Malta was under way, the Order joined her Christian allies in an imposing fleet which confronted the Turkish Ottoman enemy in the eastern Mediterranean and there, in a clash between titans, the forces of the Cross won a decisive victory over the followers of the Crescent. This was a truly interesting time for Malta, its inhabitants, and its leaders.
