Abstract: Foundation problems under Vilhena Palace and the underlying bastions have long been recorded dating back to when the citadel was being constructed. In the past a number of attempts to address these movements have been undertaken without much success. This paper investigates recent study campaign carried out by an interdisciplinary team of experts that included photogrammetry, ground and structural monitoring, structural and geotechnical investigation and laboratory testing, and finite element modelling. Finally a geotechnical and structural solution to the problem is proposed.
