Abstract: The cultural heritage of Malta includes a rich component of British colonial military structures and sites. Some of these fortifications are already being used for cultural tourism but many others still need to be put on the heritage map of the island. The south east coast of Malta is of particular interest in this ambit as there are numerous large and architecturally interesting sites which can and should be brought back to a good state of conservation. Such an effort will serve a double purpose - first and foremost it will contribute to the protection of the local and national heritage, and secondly it will serve to open the sites to the public and attract specialised visitors. Such an exercise will strengthen the niche of military cultural heritage tourism in Malta.
