The refugee crisis and Turkey's integration in the European Union

Abstract

This dissertation focuses on the Turkey's accession to the EU. Besides analysing the dynamics of the relationship between both sides, it will also incorporate the escalation of the refugee crisis in the wake of Syrian conflict which started six years ago. Moreover, it identifies particular member states attitude towards Turkey's accession, before the crisis intercepted the EU's border, followed by the latest impulse to 're-energize' the negotiations with Turkey. Furthermore, it explores the extent to which the refugee crisis has become a mediator between Turkey and the EU. It also investigates the magnitude of EU's compliance with its self-acclaimed 'normativity', in light of the controversial statement ratified a year ago.
