| Abstract: | The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how Malta can become an eco-tourist destination exploring the economic challenges and opportunities faced. The dissertation is based on ecotourism documents and strategies constructed by the European Union which are transposed for the Maltese islands. The literature analysed in the dissertation describes what ecotourism entails and what its benefits are. It illustrates the economic potentials that sustainable tourism creates; namely better employment opportunities thus leading to a higher percentage of Gross Domestic Product each year. The study seeks to recognise the link between tourism and the environment and what type of schemes is the European Union funding to Malta and Gozo in order to achieve a better surrounding for both the locals and the tourists. The analysis also shows that Malta, as a small island state, is already working towards becoming an eco-tourist destination, however, more work and strategies need to be constructed as we lack an official policy strategy. Furthermore, in order to achieve substantial progress, the demand area for business and leisure should be more reliable. However, a good insight on the subject and principles of sustainable tourism can lead to a greater way of thinking and habits by both the locals and the tourists. |
