| Abstract: | Even if we could not conquer, we should drag half the World into destruction with us and leave no one to triumph over Germany......we shall never capitulate, no never! We may be destroyed, but if we are we shall drag a World with us- a World in flames. (Hitler 1934) Malta's geographical proximity to Italy with a mere 93 kilometres away from each other, has by the passing of time, constantly influenced and also permeated political, economic, and cultural relations between both states. This thesis aims to provide an overall view during the Second World War of what led to such a severe war, what were the impacts of it on both Italy and the Maltese Islands together with some other issues affected by the outcome of war. ltalo-Maltese relations consistent continuity dates back to the years following the risorgimento and Italy's unification in which years the Maltese population had undoubtedly undergone both cultural and political influences. The risorgimentali operated their political campaign from Malta as they found refuge on it and it was also from this island that they inspired the first latent nationalist feelings in Maltese conscience. |
