| Abstract: | The French capture of the Maltese islands n the summer of 1798 was no accidental affair. This small but strategically sited archipelago, built into a formidable bulwark over the course of 268 years by the Order of Hospitaller knights, had become an important and heavily fortified base tat no naval super power vying for the control of the Mediterranean Sea in the late eighteen century could afford to ignore. |
