Abstract: This dissertation is a biographical investigation so as to understand prayer, according to the writings and teaching of Hans Urs von Balthasar. It is divided in three chapters. Chapter one deals with the life of Hans Urs von Balthasar, studied in the social and ecclesial context of the twentieth-century. It undertakes to assess briefly the influences in his theology and spirituality. Chapter two looks at the theology and spirituality of von Balthasar, in order to help us understand his approach to prayer. Chapter three deals with Christian prayer, and how according to von Balthasar, prayer, seen as a relationship with God, affects the contemporary Christian.
