The conservation and preservation of two sets of panoramic lithographs after Giuseppe Schranz : a case study

Abstract

This study deals with the conservation of two lithographic panoramic views of the Bosphorus after the artist Giuseppe Schranz. The introduction covers the historical context in which these lithographs were produced and some background information about the artist and the lithographer. The second chapter consists of a detailed condition assessment of the artefacts. The condition report that assesses the problems present on the objects determines the treatments to be carried out to increase the aesthetic value of the objects. The third chapter is a detailed description of the treatments carried out as part of a conservation project including, the removal of pressure-sensitive tape, mechanical cleaning, tests for ink solubility, pH, removal of paint layers and adhesive stain reduction, stain removal, aqueous cleaning, repairs and reinforcement of the paper support. In the following chapter issues on the display and storage of these panoramic views are outlined. Two display and storage systems are explained. The first one being a phase-box with drawers and the second a custom-made set of acrylic folders. The second option was chosen as part of the conservation project and a thorough explanation is given as to how these were manufactured.
