Abstract: 'Deffun' mortars are part of the Maltese building industry history. This type of mortar was developed by the Romans for their own building needs. The 'Deffun' is based on a mix of lime, crushed pottery and water, which is applied in a specific way leading to a high performance hydraulic mortar used for the protection of roofs against the action of rainwater. In this study, the characteristics and physical properties of this traditional mortar have been investigated. Chapters two to four give at first an overview of the materials used to produce hydraulic mortars, followed by an introduction to the technology of 'Deffun' in Malta. Several people who worked in the field were interviewed on the materials, the manufacturing and application techniques, which where used in the past. Chapters five and six describe the experimental approach, from the sampling to the analytical techniques used for the scientific work. Eight samples were taken from different old buildings located in southern Malta and analysed by optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and water absorption tests. Through both field interviews and scientific investigations, relevant information and data were collected with regard to the characteristics of 'Deffun' mortars. Among the samples analysed, only one was made according to the presumed tradition, which implies that different manufacturing techniques could have been used. This study represents a main contribution to the understanding of 'Deffun' mortars, both on a technical and scientific point of view. This study provides also a solid background for future developments regarding the use of 'Deffun' mortars for restoration and conservation purposes.
