Abstract: The Second World War has always been a period of great interest to me since I was young in age. The recalled memories of my grandparents and the great fascination I have for military planes and artillery has ever since attracted my attention and motivated me to delve further into the subject. In my dissertation, I took the opportunity to develop and deepen this particular interest, by focusing upon the years prior to Malta's entrance into the Second World War. In my introductory chapter, I tried to give a brief overview of the situation in the Mediterranean between 1935-1940 and attempted to underline the primary episodes which brought about an atmosphere of instability and tension within this region. The aim was to provide a clear picture of the background which Malta found herself in following the year 1935. This leads to the second chapter, which concentrates upon the British response to the new threats which the island of Malta found itself in, situated at the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. The dilemma which the British encountered in reinforcing the island's defences is clearly highlighted in this chapter and supported by the debates that took place between the leading three British services until the eve of war. The next chapter then focuses upon the importance granted to the passive defence system on the island and the public exercises this entailed in order to educate and instruct the people on how to seek protection and shelter. The fourth and final chapter of this dissertation deals with the military units and defensive architecture which were established on the island, in confrontation to the mounting threats generated within the Mediterranean during this period. The question whether Malta was fully prepared and defended when it entered the war on June 1940 is brought to light and discussed by the research I have made concerning the subject.
