Abstract: The purpose of this research study is to sensitise readers and inform interested stakeholders on the need for a national strategy for the preservation and access to national audiovisual collections. Motivated by the research question What are the requirements and hindrances in setting up a national digital repository for the preservation and access to Maltese audiovisual collections? The author explores the sector needs, and aims to identify the infrastructural challenges in devising a preservation strategy and a digital archive for the nation. This dissertation presents a critique of international sector literature and includes ethnographic research leading to an in-depth case study of a local collection. Moreover, it provides an assessment of local preservation activity and digitisation projects. An analysis of data derived from interviews with key stakeholders in the field who have divulged information and expertise will be analysed. This research process has helped the author to extract key findings which will inform practice on a national level. The research demonstrates the urgency and need to take action and devise a national strategy and a way forward for continued access to audiovisual collections by the designated community and for the continuity of collective memory for posterity.
