| Abstract: | The thought behind this essay lies in a few observations regarding the use of the Name of the Lord i.e. the way we use it to praise His Name in our daily living or the way we invoke it to gain personal, political or social advantages, eg. when people put their conscience aside and wreck their faith in consequence, by way of implanting erroneous doctrines in the minds of others who are not inclined to seek or verify further as to what this Name stands for eg. how it aspires in us faith, hope and love or how in the words of St. Thomas Aquinas "people need more careful instructions about the truth of faith, because when errors arise (deliberate or otherwise) single minded people run the risk of being corrupted by heretics." This Name can also be used in the coarsest and. basest form and this would amount to blasphemy where again it could occur under many guises eg. verbal, internal or external, through ignorance or lack or religious education or through the outright defiance or hatred of God. Misusing or abusing the Name of God can become a way of life i.e. from the basest form of a daily vice (blasphemy) to the more refined way which is also inserted into our way of living, this goes undetected unless we undertake to be more discerning in own daily way of living because as the great German poet Heine observes "our very garments are woven thread by thread by blasphemy the bread we eat is kneaded by blasphemy and our very homes are cemented by blasphemy. |
