| Abstract: | Malta has undergone a significant transformation in its economic landscape during the past years under the Labour government, with its preponderant neoliberal agenda. The social outline of the small island nation state has also shifted, however it was seriously doubted the notion that such changes have in reality seen the rise of a new middle class, as being repeatedly gloated by the party in government. It was therefore deemed to be the appropriate time to specifically analyse contemporary Maltese social class and social mobility. Drawing on insights supplied by members of Malta's elite political, civil, and academic classes, alongside secondary sources gathered from government agencies and statisticians, this project employs to deconstruct social class and the extent to which social mobility and meritocracy is possible within the current socio-economic landscape. |
