Abstract: 'Calendula officinalis L.' is an herbaceous, aromatic plant with yellow or orange flowers and is commonly known as pot marigold. It is cultivated commercially for the harvesting of its flowers and seeds which have medicinal and industrial uses. It is also cultivated as a cut flower and as an ornamental garden plant. Various constituents are found in different parts of the plant, however, the most important constituents for medicinal and cosmetic use are found in the flower heads. 'Calendula officinalis L.' has many different uses and many products are made from it. 'Flos calendulae' is the crude drug obtained from 'Calendula officinalis L.' and this is used in pharmacology and for the production of other products such as tincture and ointment. Other products made from 'Calendula officinalis L.' include essential oil, calendula oil, tea, and various cosmetic products. Various studies in experimental pharmacology show that extracts obtained from the plant have potential useful effects as they have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, and wound-healing properties. The seed has industrial uses because it contains Calendic acid that is a useful compound for chemical modification and production of industrial products. 'Calendula officinalis L.' is also used in food preparations and to adulterate saffron. The feasibility study shows the expenses incurred in the cultivation of Calendula officinalis L. and these are related to the land, land preparation, labour, propagation material, machinery and tools, and other materials needed during cultivation. The price of products made from Calendula officinalis L. depends on many factors, such as the source of production.
