Abstract: Malta’s devotion to Our Lady is a manifest reality tracing its origins to the fog of history. From time immemorial, the locals have prayed to the Madonna; manifested their love to her through the dedication of churches, chapels, and altars, as well as through the widespread Marian emblems, statues, paintings, and other related images; set up societies and confraternities bearing and honouring the name of St Mary; and named their houses, streets, squares, and environs in her honour. Everywhere one hears people calling their fellows Marija, Marjo, Mari, and myriad other derivatives of Mary, including Myra, Miriam, Marian, Maria, Marie, etc. Indeed, the Mother of Jesus can be said to have permeated every space and place, and with the passing of the centuries, has become an intimately interwoven and inseparable presence among the native population. Santa Marija is a special patron saint of Malta. She is devotedly venerated by a still generally Catholic local population and is celebrated under various appellations as the principal patron saint in at least 37 parishes in the Maltese islands, along with numerous secondary, though markedly significant, feasts. It is quite pertinent to claim that Malta is Marian in spirit and emotion and under the title of the Assumption, Our Lady is widely celebrated around the Maltese Islands, as well as in many other countries all over the world.
