Spelling correction for Maltese

Abstract

This document describes a spelling correction system for the Maltese language. The document initially introduces some background on spelling correction and describes problems in applying such techniques on the Maltese language. This is followed by a brief description of the Maltese language and its complex morphological system. The next items discussed are the lexicon, morphology, detection and correction, and how these are related to the spelling correction system, namely, "MSpell". Finally, the document presents an evaluation of the performance of the system and a conclusion, which contains a discussion regarding any enhancements and further work that can be applied to the system.
