| Abstract: | Along with a few species of cultivated crops in the world, the pomegranate has been one of the most revolutionary and successful species for mankind, in terms of agriculture, medicine and other important aspects of life. Due to its very beneficial properties, the pomegranate also had great influences in folklore and religion. Therefore, with its increase in popularity, throughout the ages of its cultivation, the species has greatly expanded well over outside its native range, and has further diversified in different countries, including the Maltese islands. Malta has undergone several cultural changes since man arrived on the islands, and with the modem trend of urbanisation, the local pomegranate use has greatly diminished, especially from the traditionally point of view. However, with the current motivation of consumers searching for traditionally produced and healthy products, the pomegranate is being sought out for again. Moreover, in recent years, some countries have discovered the full potential of its economical use, and have been successful so far. Therefore, the chances of pomegranates becoming a viably resourceful species in Malta are great. These are the reasons why this study focuses on the several important aspects of pomegranates in every day life. These include heritage, the economy, ecology and environmental aesthetics, medicinal achievements and health beneficiaries, and most importantly finding solutions to an ever changing world. Ultimately these aspects can all contribute to a more sustainable way of life. To achieve such an objective, this study analyses the challenges that can or often limit this aim, but this study also comes up with strategies and suggested changes in trends which need to be taken into consideration, such the newly growing opportunities of Agro-tourism, organic farming, and the growing range of possible pomegranate products and recipes, all which can be very applicable to the Maltese islands. |
