| Abstract: | The mam aim of this research was to study the legal, scientific and practical implications of Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) of plant protection products as required by current European Union (EU) and National Legislations. The current legislation, the definition and the importance of MRLs with particular reference to fruit and vegetables which are of significant importance in Malta were thoroughly analysed. The sampling procedure and method for preparing samples for consignment to an accredited laboratory for analysis are discussed. As part of the research for this study a visit was paid to the CE.FI.T. Srl laboratory at Avola in Sicily. The aim of the visit was to thoroughly examine the analysis carried out by the accredited laboratory to determine pesticide residues present on samples of fruit and vegetables from the local market. A survey was conducted to analyse the demand aspect of the market. This determined the consumer preference on the consumption of fruit and vegetables while analysing the level of consumer awareness on the concept of pesticides and their monitoring. Furthermore consumer concern on pesticide use during the production of fruit and vegetables was also taken into consideration. Participants were also free to express any relevant comments and suggestions which proved to be fruitful for the study. In conclusion after evaluating the supply, demand and regulatory aspects, a number of recommendations to be considered during the monitoring programme of 2009 were specified. These are meant to ensure consumer satisfaction, protect the consumer from harmful consumption of pesticide residues and place the supplier m a more advantageous position while fulfilling Malta's legal requirements. |
