Abstract

This work seeks to highlight the importance of the relationship between the Catholic Church and the State, throughout the history of Spain till the death of Franco in 1975. The functionality of the church was important for society and the State was important for the Church. Important people, laws, Concordats, Conventions and events which were either privileged or put at a disadvantage will be analysed. Consequently it will be a detailed study from the beginning, with the Roman Empire, the Reconquista of the Catholic Monarchs, the law of the purity of blood and Modern Spain. Moreover what the Church gained with the Reconquista, it would lose it all with the Second Republic leaving the institution in a compromised situation. However, all this changed in 1936 with the Civil War, which was called by priests a crusade to highlight the importance of the Church. In the last chapter the relationship between the Church and Franco’s regimen will be analysed. As with Franco’s leadership, all changes which the Republicans brought about were abolished. In addition, it is concluded that the relationship of national-Catholicism did not last and what was known as a very united alliance, was just a façade which was shattered.
