Abstract: Animal Welfare is becoming a popular term, familiar to all those people dealing with animals. These last few yearn have shown great improvement in acknowledging the fact that consideration should be given to the animals' well-being, especially when they are used by humans. Many countries have adopted different legislations to ensure that animal welfare is respected. The European Commission has published specific requirements regarding farm animals that had to be implemented by every Member State. Malta, being part of the European Union, has adopted such regulations. Farms have to adapt and comply with various regulations that aim at improving the farm animals well-being. Having daily food and water, having enough space where to move, being kept in a safe and clean environment are some of the essential requirements farmers have to comply with. The aim of this study is to identify the Legislations and Policies dealing with animal welfare and in doing so investigate the level of awareness of farmers in relation to such policies and consequently find out their level of knowledge with regards to animal welfare. Results show that the majority of Maltese farmers are aware of their responsibilities and many-a-time non-compliance with any regulation is the result of lack of information or lack of financial aid. The study ends by proposing recommendations on how responsible authorities should act to distribute information and a better understanding of animal welfare policies so that it can be attained by all concerned farmers.
