Abstract: Websites, electronic documents, e-books are full of information which is delivered in a format-oriented structure, making the content understandable only through human eyes. Web pages for example are full of meaningful data/information but only the presentation of the content is being taken care of, therefore a web agent or any other program cannot understand what the meaning of the content is. By using the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) to mark up the information, the hassle for people that use different platforms to read this information from any document or webpage can be minimized. This solution is taken a step further and is introduced in an environment where documents in a specific structure are already being created. The aim of this dissertation is to develop an application that is capable to understand a marked up document and extract the right content. XML will therefore not only add meaning to a tagged document but also structure. An ontology specific to the area of interest will also be created this will add knowledge, about specific tags; this will then facilitate also what information should be written in a tag.
