| Abstract: | Basic requirements for a successful Performance Management Programme are an awareness of the school's aims and objectives, an understanding of the policies designed to meet them and an appreciation of how individual roles complement one another in ensuring that these policies are carried out. This work will draw from a questionnaire, which was sent to 10 State primary schools, addressed to members of the Senior Management Team and the teaching staff. Meetings were held with the Director General of the Education Department and the President of the Malta Union of Teachers, to explore the origin of a Performance Management Programme within the Maltese Educational System. A thorough literature review enabled me to get better insight of the subject researched. Although it was a small-scale study, the research proved that Administrators and teachers in Maltese State schools are aware of the importance of a Performance Management Programme and believe that it enhances the professional development of teachers. However much work has still to be done for appraisal to be conducted successfully. |
