IPS Journal : Issue 3 : January 2022

Abstract

The Institute for the Public Services (IPS) has just published the third issue of the IPS Journal issue — an academic journal that offers space for new public service research. It contains articles written by academics and also lets IPS students bring forward information on their studies, in various fields.

In this edition there is an article on the vision of IPS, marking the fifth year of its inauguration. Prof Charles Galdies, lecturer at the University of Malta in Environmental Planning and Management, speaks of public policy and climate change. Prof. Saviour Formosa, a criminologist, and Mr Angelo Gafà, Commissioner of Police, analyse the transformation and reforms taking place within the Police Corps. Mr Steve Agius, COO of Mater Dei Hospital, and Prof. Michael Borg, Head of the Infection Control Department at the Hospital, talk about lessons learned by Malta from the Covid-19 pandemic and what we should do to be better prepared in this field.

The Institute for the Public Services is given great importance in the new strategy “Achieving a Service of Excellence”. The strategy deals with how IPS should analyse the training and needs of data collected by the central human resources systems, and identify and suggest research areas for students to conduct studies for a thesis or other assignment. Existing schemes for students and apprenticeships and recognition for Early Learning of Individuals are also being strengthened.
