| Abstract: | This dissertation discusses one of the most controversial issues that within the European Union. A functioning Common Foreign Security Policy requires a high level of political integration. This is something which still lacks the EU. Small European States are also part of this developing CFSP. The dissertation analyses how effective Small States are in the EU's CFSP and uses the experiences of Ireland and Luxembourg, two Small Member States, to project how Malta would function once it joins the EU in May 2004. The dissertation analyses the theories related to Small States and the creation and development of the CFSP till the present. The experiences of Ireland and Luxembourg are also discussed. Malta's future in the CFSP is envisaged as one where its political influence in the International System is increased. Through its European dimension and its Mediterranean geo-strategic position, Malta could adopt an important role in future EU-Mediterranean relations. |
