| Abstract: | Parking at the University Campus has lately become a problem, especially if a person visits the Campus after 8 o'clock in the morning. An Intelligent Parking System (IPS) helps in reducing this problem. The project being proposed will detect vehicles entering or leaving a car park, checks whether the vehicle is authorized to park on Campus and searches for the availability of free parking spaces. Furthermore, the IPS will be able to inform the driver about available car park spaces. The project is based on image processing techniques, where images of the car park under study and of vehicles entering or leaving the car park are captured by cameras and sent to a central server over the Campus Wi-Fi connection. Number plates are then extracted and checked for authentication. When an authorized vehicle is identified, the necessary actions by security personnel are taken. To keep the costs low, the project uses the University IT infrastructure to capture and transmit images while open source software is used to recognise the vehicles' number plates. The IPS will help to reduce the traffic congestion around the Campus and thus keeping the fuel emissions from vehicles as low as possible. |
