Abstract: Transition periods are brought about by shifting policy environments. Transitions are the first staged of the change process. The quality of leadership during such delicate periods affects the actual implementation of the policy. This essay attempts to explore the notion of transition leadership. Ten Heads of School practicing locally in a shifting policy environment were interviewed. The data collected was analysed and placed within a review of current leadership theory. Transition leadership is complex and challenging. Successful leaders integrate several aspects of leadership in order to deal with the complicated and often turbulent reality of the transition period. Transition leaders focus on five main points: knowledge of the policy, reading the school context, translating vision into mission, bridging the old and the new and empowerment for capacity building. Transition leadership as a reflective, integrated approach provides a comprehensive tool for embracing change.
