Abstract: St Mary's Catholic Primary School, Beckenham is a popular and oversubscribed school which has expanded over the years. St Mary's has high expectations for pupils and staff. It is proud of its multicultural ethos as every person is treated with respect whatever his or her gender, ability, race, nationality or age. Pupils enjoy their learning and achieve high standards. St Mary's safe and orderly environment promotes learning even by exhibiting pupils' work. It also maintains an ongoing, effective staff development programme and the Senior Leadership Team regularly discusses staff and pupil performance. The Headteacher, Mrs Vassallo, is a strong, assertive instructional leader, an excellent role model, emphasizing collaboration, participation and collegial relations. The payoff is a positive school climate where staff appreciates one another, share, and plan together. This attitude has a spill over effect regarding relationships with students. The school communicates effectively with parents and these in tum play a pro-active role, not only as members of the PTA, but also as voluntary helpers both during and after school hours. We have been positively impressed by the ability of all pupils to express themselves freely without any difficulty. Thinking and creativity skills are boosted by effective teaching strategies and practices. Besides, pupils' knowledge and understanding of the traditional Catholic beliefs are key aspects of the curriculum. Our visit has proved to be effective and beneficial especially in respect to our evaluation of St Mary's administration in the light of the Maltese educational system.
