Belvedere College, S.J., Dublin, Ireland : a report

Abstract

During the period 3rd to the 14th November 1997 I was attached to Belvedere College, Dublin 1. to observe and reflect upon its administrative practice. As a guide for our research, Mr. Joseph Muscat the lecturer in charge of the visits abroad advised us to look for various topics while on our observation. These were: [a] The Organisational and Management Structures, including its planning, decision making, distribution of responsibilities and authority, communication and evaluation. [b] Aspects of the School's work with its curriculum, pastoral provision, climate and discipline, extra curricula activities, careers and guidance and assessment policies. [c] Teacher Roles, his relationship with the administration, colleagues, parents and outside bodies. [d] Opportunities for Professional Development. My research was carried out by interviewing the Senior Management team, Head of Departments, various teachers and students. I also took the opportunity to meet parents, to visit classes and even to join students on school excursions. These occasions gave me time to reflect and get a clear insight of the college's organisational structures and methods adopted in their academic practice. I also attended Senior Management meetings, staff meetings and parents' evenings while taking all opportunities to read through School literature and Reference material which carried relevant information.
