The primary school head-teacher : the delegating aspect

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the aspect of delegation in both State and Non state schools in the Maltese Islands, its application to educational management and its relation to the theory and practice in school administration and management Chapter 1 gives an introduction to delegation and Chapter 2 includes the research methodology. In Chapter 3 we look at time management and how by delegation a head-teacher can plan better those management tasks that have a high impact on school effectiveness like curriculum planning, evaluation and innovation. Chapter 4 relates to effective leadership and staff motivation. Chapter 5 deals with principles of delegation and the process that leads to successful delegation. Chapter 7 shows how power, authority and responsibility together with trust and control are involved in delegation. Staff participation and sharing management work are discussed in Chapters 7 and 8 respectively while the communication aspect of delegation is included in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 and Chapter 11 relate to delegated and non-delegated tasks respectively while the advantages of delegation are discussed in Chapter 12. Finally Chapter 13 highlights important personal comments and conclusions about delegation derived from this research work. It is evident that the changing role of the primary school head-teacher includes a number of tasks that can, and have to be delegated for an effective administration and management of a school.
