Abstract: This thesis has been sponsored by Hydraulic Units Ltd. of San Gwann and continues the close collaboration between the Company and the Engineering Faculty of the University of Malta. The thesis has been suggested by the Company; who informed the University that they would once again be offering to sponsor a final year project based on the production of components for solenoid valves, with particular reference to the solenoid cover. Two initial meetings between the managing director Mr. M Scibberras, the project tutor Professor R Ghirlando and myself were held. During these meetings the following objectives for the project were set. (1) To determine an optimum manufacturing system for the production of the two sizes of solenoid covers at present being manufactured by the firm. · (2) To develop the AMOS (the machine built by J A Bartolo and J A Restall as their final year project in 1987-88) into a fully working system and integrate it with the present production. (3) To propose and develop a system which would bring the present manufacturing system of Solenoid Covers closer to optimum methods established in (1) and (2) above.
