Abstract: The aim of this project was to investigate the change in the physical and 'mechanical' properties of a machine lubricating oil - in our case CARNBA 35, (Shell Ltd.) The lubricant in question was subjected to various 'working hours', and its properties were thoroughly investigated by a special viscometer. The viscometer consisted of two main parts: l. The rotary part., which was driven by a falling weight arrangement and which could be lowered at various depths into the fluid to be investigated. 2 . The relatively stationary part which held the fluid and measuring devices. This whole arrangement was hung from the roof by means of a wire, such that during an experiment, the viscous effect was balanced by the torsional effect of the wire for a known low speed of the frustum shaped bob. It was required to find all expression relating the viscous torque, depth of immersion end angular speed of frustum to the viscosity of the lubricant under investigation. For comparison the viscosity was also reed by a standard apparatus (Redwood Viscometer). [...]
