Abstract: This research paper plans to provide an evaluation of the complex matter of Tuna fish farming in Malta and the resulting policies. Some of these policies have been introduced before Malta joined the European Union but were nonetheless in compliance with EU regulations. After joining the block, added laws had to be complied albeit with the same number of public servants. This posed and still poses especially for a microstate such as Malta a big dilemma, where public officers already have to wear many hats. The change from direct ICCAT membership to an indirect one, brought on by EU membership has reduced Malta's bargaining power as it has become one voice of twenty-seven. The Maltese government in collaboration with the Commission is developing the national strategic plan for fisheries. This plan is the basis for the fisheries operational programme, where the national authorities determine to support several areas among them tuna fish farming. The aquaculture strategy report dearly indicates that the government is furthering its involvement in this domain, as it has become a mainstay of our economy and employment sector which is sure to see an increase in the years to come. The policy development also affects the different stakeholders, which all have distinctive agendas which may not be always compatible with the industry as well as the Maltese government. However, tuna fish farming will continue in the foreseeable future, despite downsizing of fishing quotas.
