Abstract: The European Union (EU) has been working towards an increase in the growth and stability of its member states. Through the establishments of small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) this can be possible. Furthermore, the EU is working towards an increase in the rate of female entrepreneurship across Europe, particularly through the Small Business Act (SBA) and the Europe 2020 Strategy (EU2020). However, it is up to the EU member states to implement initiatives aiding the participation of female entrepreneurship in their country. This reading provides a discussion on the case of Malta with regards female entrepreneurship. This is done through a qualitative method where a document analysis is implemented together with additional interviews. The result of the study shows that Malta does not have the necessary tools for promoting female entrepreneurship. This is because incentives promoting entrepreneurship are set for both genders. This does not reflect the strategies proposed by the EU, where female entrepreneurship is being given more importance than previous years. Lastly, the behaviours behind women becoming entrepreneurs in Malta are portrayed. It is found, that, the 'glass ceiling' phenomenon and caring responsibilities are two of the main push factors for women becoming self employed in Malta. On the other hand, the fear of failure is the main reason behind women not starting their own business as well as taking more years than men to become entrepreneurs.
