Abstract

This dissertation examines the history and issues treated by Green Parties in Europe as well as by the Maltese Green Party Alternattiva Demokratika. The history and organization of the Federation of European Greens and the Green Group in the European Parliament is discussed. The dissertation also tackles Green issues at four different levels - the international, the national, the community and the individual. It also carries a discussion on the relationship of Green Politics and Gandhian thought and on the spiritual dimension of Green Politics. Alternattiva Demokratika was set up in 1989 as a group of active young people with different political and social backgrounds who came together to work on a clean, environmental political platform. The author suggests that what started as a movement with the intention of incorporating other citizens' organizations developed into a political party with a more traditional structure. It is suggested that this was as a result of the activists' experiences and the exigencies of contesting elections.
