Looking at blood donors from a gender perspective

Abstract

Blood Donation is one of the largest areas in which the voluntary sector contributes to the welfare of the whole of society. The Malta Blood Bank is responsible for blood donors who donate blood between the ages of 17 to 65 years, to supply those in need of blood. Every day there is a need of blood supply for patients ranging from women who gave birth to babies and, persons of all ages. The Blood Bank research indicates that there were times when the number of male donors was higher than that of females. Females face more specific barriers in health, are lighter than males on average, are also prone to anaemia and can become pregnant. Besides facing all specific barriers, women also work in the home and public sphere, and they are also generally the carers. This study takes a closer look at both genders, "Are both genders participating in blood donation?" This research study attempts to find out whether there is gender difference in blood donation, and tries to find out if the reasons mentioned above are the real causes, of inactivity of blood donation. The results of the research analysis performed indicates that in spite of specific barriers are holding back females from donating blood. The difference between males and females is insignificant, and females participation is considered satisfactory and almost equal to men.
