Abstract: From earliest times singing was regarded as an expression of religious chants obviously reserved only for men. With the flourishing of the arts during the period of the Renaissance skilled singers performed in festivals and crusades. Starting with the 17th century in most royal courts all over Europe and in most Church choirs the castrati found fame because women were barred from participating. It was only in the 18th century that we find the emergence of the female voice. In this qualitative study I shall explore how women singers attained fame fulfilling a life long challenge. With special reference to my case study, I hope to give a true account of Marie Therese Vassallo' s singing career for all to enjoy and appreciate.
