| Abstract: | This research aims to provide a detailed account of the people management approach adopted by Playmobil Malta Ltd. during a change program. It gives the reader an opportunity to analyse people management practice since the beginning of specific methods such as scientific management, which in its own time was thought to be effective in establishing a formal working context that guaranteed efficiency and reliability. These methods tried to promote respect to the human element in production through more democratic decision making and opportunities for increased autonomy. Throughout the discussion, the researcher's personal view is given. Reference to particular features of different management styles is made in an attempt to identify the roots of the corporate management style encouraged at Playmobil Malta Ltd. The research strategies used, including one to one interview and surveys are intended to provide an insight into the different characteristics of the corporate style currently being implemented in the organisation. This involves a range of contributors, including the Chief Executive Officer, managers and employees. Among opinions emerging from different strata of the organisation, the wish for increased communication between managers and shop floor employees was expressed. Moreover, motivation is considered to be lacking at some point. Top management has to carry the responsibility of communicating assurances of improved relationships and working conditions to the employees. A more successful approach is gaining people's trust and believe in their accountability rather than imposing control over them. Only through such a strategy Playmobil's management will eventually have the opportunity to clear their minds of doubts, hence, enabling employees to view change as a healthy organisational process. |
