The main gate of Fort Manoel : a historical background, the importance, description, documentation and drawings of the gateway present state

Abstract

My Dissertation is about the Main gate of Fort Manoel. The First Chapter deals with an introduction to the Order of St John and the period after its arrival in Malta in 1530. Particularly the work by French Military engineers in Malta. In this chapter, I focus on the eighteenth century and the work of French Military Architects during the sovereignty of Manoel de Vilhena. The following chapter revolves around the importance and function of a Gateway, in the work of fortification. The Third Chapter is about the Baroque Gateway: how it differs from other gates, and its inherent Symbolism, and design. The Fourth Chapter is a documentation of the Fort Manoel gateway its includes photos, plans, as well as a record of the current state. It was found the Public Works, the Public Library, and the Hospitaller archives at the National Library and even at Santo Spirito Archives in Rabat are presented in their draughts. The Fifth chapter deals with the graphic reconstruction of Fort Manoel's Gateway and its adjoining ramparts. It includes the enclosed buildings as also the two rooms inside the Gate. In Conclusion, their study provides a record of the present state of repair of the gate, its conservation problems, the nature of restoration works required, and how the actual application of all these can be recommendation implemented.
