Abstract: Statistics are a channel of communication and a means of information. They are an important tool for the formulation and evaluation of policies that promote the social and economic well-being of the country. The Public Administration as the body entrusted with the implementation of government policies, requires statistical data for socio-economic planning. The aim of the National Statistics Office is to provide the users of statistical data with a high quality, objective and responsive statistical service with information on the economic, demographic and social situation of the country. Social statistics supports the work of social policy by describing social conditions and the social well-being of the population. These statistics include the Household Budgetary Survey, the Census of Population and Housing, the Labour Force Survey, Education, Poverty and Social Exclusion. Economic statistics are necessary for financial, fiscal and monetary measures. These include the National Accounts, Balance of Payments, Retail Price Index and Inflation. Such data enables decision-makers to analyse whether the undertaken initiatives and projects have yielded the desired results, as well as to be able to forecast future indicators.
