Abstract: This essay deals with staircases. It is intended to explain the concept of stairs. It deals with the stereotomy pertaining to staircases, defines the terminology used for their parts, names and illustrates different types of stair ways which have been used in architecture both on the inside of buildings and in urban spaces during the Baroque period. It is intended to depict and explain the importance in the role of the Baroque staircase both as a necessity and as a decorative element. It accounts for some of the most famous Baroque staircases in palaces and in urban spaces in Europe, their architects, designers and decorators and their respective sponsors. This composition includes sketches, plans and photographs to enhance the perception of the subject.
