| Abstract: | Gastronomic tourism is a theme that has been developing since classical times. It recently emerged as a niche market and has become particularly popular among tourists who are interested in destination cuisines. Since food serves as an essential part of life, it plays an important role in a holiday experience and serves as a tool for cultural, social, and economic development. This study builds on the idea that Malta’s geographical proximity to Sicily has resulted in a natural relationship with the larger island over centuries which, since time immemorial, was heavily oriented towards commodity products. As a result, this study investigates the motivations that induce a substantial sector of the Maltese population to feel a special attraction to the Sicilian food market, not only through the consumption of Sicilian foods but even through their participation in activities in which Sicily’s gastronomy features highly. Additionally, it analyses the attitudes and perceptions of the Maltese towards Sicilian cuisine. In order to determine these motivational factors, two questionnaires - one in Maltese, and another in English - were distributed amongst a sizeable number of Maltese that have visited Sicily for gastronomic purposes - these were then analysed using descriptive statistics. Results suggested that the most apparent motivators of these travellers were a desire to reach ‘togetherness’ - meaning the wish to establish personal connections and achieve social inclusion - sharing exciting and authentic experiences, sensory appeals, and acquiring further knowledge on Sicily’s culinary practices. Thus, perceived as a heritage asset, Sicily’s local food motivates the Maltese population to glance back over the years by consuming authentic food products at their place of origin. This established a positive and satisfactory perception towards the restaurants visited and activities undertaken. In conclusion, despite the strong relations, based on ancient historical and geographical proximity of Sicily and Malta, the interest in Sicilian gastronomy is largely the result of the interconnectedness of people, ideas, commerce, and other aspects of life. Thus, the Maltese visitors to Sicily interpret Sicilian cuisine in a variety of ways due to a strong and direct influence instigated by a common past, geographical proximity, and the sharing of resources. |
