Abstract: The main aim of this qualitative research is to explore how Maltese men in dual-earner relationships are managing their breadwinning and family roles. This study looks at the cause and effect of work-family conflict on men's lives and that of their families and builds on Joan Acker's theory of gendered organisations (1990). This revolves around the notion that the 'ideal worker' is typically a man who prioritises paid work over family and who leaves the caring responsibilities to his wife or partner. However, more recent research is showing that, due to the increasing number of women who are active in the labour market, men are also experiencing an increase in work-family conflict. This has been described as the male mystique. This research looks at the work-life challenge through a male lens and is based on five in-depth interviews with men in dual-earner families. A Thematic Analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) approach was used to analyse the data. The findings suggest that conflicts vary according to the nature and demands of the job of the father. It is also affected by the work and level of commitment of the job of their spouse. This research shows that although Maltese men are increasingly feeling the need to part-share the family responsibilities, success at work is still an important role for them. It also confirms that structural barriers like lack of flexibility and unpaid parental leave can hinder them from achieving their goals. Finally the research shows that change is possible if both men and women work together with organisations and the government to address the work-life challenge.
